Wave The Flag by Sam Clarkson

Wave The Flag -

This image came from working with the residual rough natural clay which is left after screening the refined clay - first platters- I was fascinated with the unique coarse clay. Then the wave image on the unlikely backdrop- I love waves! Then the incorporation into the American flag- that came out of my subconscious mind.

The clay asked me- how can I be the change I want to see in our country, in our world? I find the image visually strong and philosophically profound.

This is likely the first fired pot I ever made- low fire salt in the scripps studio / i wasn't even taking a class there- pirated courtesy of Mitchell Wiencken and A recently retired Paul Soldner. If this pot came to me from someone else-I would tell my cabrillo student- “see how the curve flattens out on the belly? what about how it meets the space and how it meets the ground? Lips and feet are so important, there’s something valuable about deliberate application of slips and glazes, drips are so….. drippy.” - 26 years later- i’m firing midrange salt/wood Anyway- aspiring ceramic artists- if you give your first pots to your mom, you’ll likely visit them 26 years later!!! pros and cons in this. -testing this blog to see if it will post to my personal page not the facebook business page-

Home in Tennessee by Sam Clarkson

Drove into mom and dad's garage for the first time in six years.  A hous I didn't grow up in in a town that is radically changed.  This announcement from my senior show at Pomona College greeted me!  and twenty five years later, Meditation is back in my life.  I'm still searching through changes.  Using the downtime here to work on the website and get it moving...one step.

Recycled paper show announcement - original image was pen and ink and broken mirror parts (conveniently covering mistakes) on canvas.
